United States Botanic Gardens

Since William and Elisa and family were unable to come up as they had planned, I decided to go on the Relief Society excursion to the Botanical Gardens. It is a good thing, because there were only 6 sisters, 1 Priesthood leader, and 2 very young, handsome boys.
The Gardens are incredible. I only got a few pictures (the next couple of entries), but I will go back from time to time.

More beauty

There were so many beautiful plants. I really want to visit each season.

Orchids

It is very easy to know that the orchids was my absolute favorites!

Lizzie

Meet Elizabeth Grace, aka Lizzie, the adorable little girl I get to babysit. Isn't she a doll? (And I have her mom's permission to post her picture).

A Saturday with my Strange Grandkids

I'm in heaven. Even though I AGAIN had car trouble on the way to Richmond (blew the head gasket), it was still worth going to be with my family. Phillip's school had a family picnic in the park, and it was fun, but it was also fun just sitting around the house loving the grand children!

Temple in the spring

Definitely, without any reservations, the very best part of living in DC is being able to attend the Washington Temple weekly.

Me, the Metro, & Union Station

OK, I decided to finally do the Metro thing, and chose Union Station as my destination. Cynthia, Nancy, and I went there to a movie years ago, but I thought it would be fun to check it out again. First of all, all parking spots near the Metro were full and I had to pay $4 to park a long way out and walk to the Metro - and I was already tired to begin with. As for Union Station, it is truly beautiful and worth seeing, but all merchandise and food is too expensive for my budget and it was a lot of walking. I would, however, encourage anyone to go take a look around. The people were friendly, the crowds modest for this time of the year, and in all, it was an ok trip. I think now I will go outside and pick up trash in the alley behind my apartment near my driveway and entrance; that will be much more productive. But I did accomplish something - I rode the Metro by myself and made out fine!

Spring at the temple

All the flowers at the temple are really beautiful; this is just the only snapshot I took.

Phillip's 9th Birthday

Phillip's 9th birthday. They had fun playing laser tag.

Spring Is Here

Still windy, or rainy, or very cool, but spring is here!

Jamie in April

Jamie is now 7 months old - isn't he a doll?

Sara's 5th Birthday (a couple of days later)

I know I am partial, but isn't she beautiful. And Phillip is a good looking young man also who just turned 9.

A Trip to the Zoo

William's family, Adam & Cynthia, Taylor Guzman and I went to the zoo. I think they really enjoyed it a lot - even if Jamie did sleep through most of the time.

Zoo Animals

A handful of the animals we saw. I sat out with Jamie while the others went to some areas. I will go back another time. I did enjoy see the turtles lined up on the log in the above photo.

DID IT!

Well, I actually, finally did it. It's time to start using the Metro system. I downloaded the application for a disability card and Jill (from Dr. Horwitz' office) faxed it back to me. So this morning around 9, I said it's time. I drove downtown to 5th Street (near G) and went to the main Metro headquarters, where I waited, went to another area, and waited more. I had to go to an office where they checked the application, ID, medical report, Medicare card, etc. and finally gave me a form stating that I could get a Disability Card. Then I had to go outside and stand in line (26 persons in front of me), and purchase the actual card. From there, I was told to go to a Metro Station and activate it, so I drove to Fort Totten, activated it by putting money in for it, and finally, I was finished. Now I can use it on the rail or bus and it will be half fare. Hope the first of next week is pretty days, for I am going to break it in!

The lower picture is just the tree we stood under while we were in line! It is such a beautiful time of year.

Fun Time

Rachel Wixom called me around 1 and wanted to know if I would like to go to the DC Farmer's Market. Of course, I said yes - and told her I would drive. It is on Penn Street - off of New York Avenue and there are blocks of various wholesale stores, lots of t-shirts, hats, DC souvenirs, scarfs, etc. and many food stores beside the Farmer's Market - which I loved!
One of my favorites was the Mexican Fruits store. I actually purchased 2 heads of cabbage, 1 cantaloupe, 8 tangelos, 3 kiwi, 4 lemons, 1 grapefruit, spring onions, 1 zucchini, celery, and 2 Roma tomatoes for $11.00! You have to pick over it carefully to get the good, firm items, but I can do that. They also had bananas, potatoes, onions, and much more - including cactus leaves!
There are fish stores, meat stores, and at the Farmers Market you can purchase any kind of meat and spices you want with lots of fresh fruit also. We did indulge in a most delicious fruit smoothie with fresh pineapple, mango, papaya, strawberries, and banana. Um, um, good.
This is going to be a favorite place for me.
